Level 3 Lesson 1 / too much or very / 너무

Welcome to Level 3, everyone! And congratulations on finishing Level 1 and Level 2. In this lesson, we are introducing an expression that is very commonly used, and in two opposite meanings, too. The expression is 너무 [neo-mu] and it can be used to mean both “very” in positive sentences and “too much” in negative sentences. Listen in to learn more about how it is used!

- 어늘 좋은 날씨, 그랜데 너무 바빠서 식당에 갈 수 없어요..
(Today the weather is nice, but I’m too busy so I can’t go out to a restaurant)
- 한국어 너무 좋아요, 그리고 TTMIK으랑 공부 하는 것은 너무 쉬어요 :)
(I really like korean, and studying it is very easy with TTMIK)

I will translate it like this.
“저는 독일 사람인 것처럼 있는 게 좋아요.”
Dear Learners,
Please keep in mind that the correct meaning of 너무 is “too much” or “excessively” and is always in a negative sense… It’s absolutely incorrect to use this word to mean “very” in any context, though many Korean native speakers continue to misuse this word every day.
(It’s important to know this use of 너무 anyway, since most Koreans use this word in this way in everyday colloquial language, but just thought it’s also useful to be able to distinguish correct vs. incorrect use of language.)

Languages evolve. I’m pretty sure your ancestors were trying to fight the very same language you’re now defending as “correct”. And the cycle goes on and on.
It’s good to know what the rules say and to be aware of the history of the language but the rules will change eventually and what you’re now defending as “correct” will be forgotten.
If noone ever “misused” the language, it couldn’t evolve and its form would probably be very inefficient to use in everyday life. Even if you’re fond of the current state of the Korean language, fighting its evolution seems sort of pointless to me… without the evolution, there wouldn’t be much to like in the first place!
I’m saying this as someone who used to view the “misuse” of language in a similar way.
Anyway, another lovely lesson and I’m so glad I made it to level 3 :)

Why everybody change 공부하다 into 공부하는 것? Not easier just remove 하다, and it will be same meaning?
Except that, 같이 should be before 공부하는것 or 재미있어요, because its an adverb. Not sure where it’s better.
If you have too much time, the best way, is to spend it on studying Korean. :P
시간을 너무 많이 있으시면, 한국어 공부에 보내는 게 제일 좋아요.

I will only use 너무for negative sentences :)
Here my sentences:\
1.방이 청소 안 해요?너무 더러워요 !
2.이 기차가 너무 느려요.
3.그 게임이 이겨요?너무 믿을 수 없어요!
that’s all I can think of.생각할 수있는 것 전부에요.

방이 청소 안 해요? > 방을 청소 안 해요? or 방 청소 안해요?
Yeah, the rest two sentences are correct. As you mentioned, 너무 is used for negative sentences but it is also used for positive sentences like 너무 좋아요.
However, it can be confused, so I use 너무 in negative sentences.
