    Annyeonghaseyo TTMIK!!!
Gamsahamnida, your lessons is very helpful for me. Keep working on your lessons!! But I have one question. When I’m trying to read hangul, I’m always stopping on l/r ㄹ. Can you please explain me when I should read l and when r.
    Ex)
    1) Hangul (한글) so in the end I have to read sound l.
    2) Saranghaeyo (사랑해요) in the middle I have to read sound r.

    So I don’t understand when I should read l or r sound.
And the same problem with ㅇ, when I should read ng/- sound.

    Please help me!!
Thank You very much for your hard work on this page!!
    GAMSAHAMNIDA!!!

      Ana씨 안녕하세요!

If the ㄹ is followed by a vowel, it’s pronounced like “r”.
e.g. 램프 (lamp), 러시아 (Russia), 이랑 (irang), 이렇게 (ireogae)

If the ㄹ comes at the end of a word or is followed by a consonant it’s pronounced like “l”.
e.g. 할께 (hal ggae), 갈 때 (gal ddae), 말 (mal), 물건 (mulgeon), 읽다 (ilkda)

The only exception I can think of is that if a syllable ending in ㄹ is followed by ㅎ, this can behave like a vowel when spoken quickly because it sounds so similar.
      e.g.
말 = ‘mal’ but 말해봐 sounds like ‘mareba’

I think that’s all there is too it. Somebody please correct me if I am wrong!

    • Marcus Cross says: September 2, 2010

Fortunately the ㅇ rule is simple. ^^

If it comes at the beginning of a syllable, it is silent. It is only there as a holder for the following vowel.

If it comes at the end of a syllable, it is pronounced as ‘ng’.

오다 = oda (Not ‘ngoda’! Can you imagine? Heeehee!)
      강 = gang
      엉망 = eong-mang

우아아… 이런 진짜 유용한 수업들을 만들어 주셔서 너무 감사합니다! 티티믹의 처음부터 이거는 제 제일 좋아하는 수업이에요!

Could you give some examples of creating nouns in the past and present tenses from verb roots ending in a consonant?
    e.g.
    Past: 먹은 것 같아요
    Present: 먹는 것 같아요

Are these correct? “먹은 것 같아요” sounds strange to me but I don’t know if it’s wrong.

    Thanks!

    • jinseokjin says: September 2, 2010

Yeah “먹은 것 같아요” is right.

Let me give you more examples.

저 사람은 술에 취한 것 같아요. past
점점 술에 취하는 것 같아요. present

      A: 내 자전거 어디있어?
      B: 어제 팔았는 것 같아요.

그 사람은 맥주를 마시는 것 같아요. – Can you guess?
      그 사람은 맥주를 마신것 같아요.

    • caddie says: September 4, 2010

      seokjin씨,안녕하세요!

      제가 질문이 있어요.
The example sentence you gave to Marcus씨 :
      A: 내 자전거 어디있어?
      B: 어제 팔았는 것 같아요.

      In the “B” sentence,why didn’t use ” 어제 팔은 것 같요.” ?
In the PDF,taught us to use ” Action verb + -(으)ㄴ 것” for past tense. But why cannot apply it into this sentence???

      감사합니다!!! ^^

    • Jin Seok Jin says: September 6, 2010

      Oh…. my fault again….. I am sorry.

I used to say “팔았는 것” but it is gramatically wrong.

      팔다 + (으)ㄴ 것 = 판 것 – Past tense

      파는 것 – Present tense

      팔 것 – Future tense

So I had to say 어제 판 것 같아요.

      ㅠ..ㅠ

    • caddie says: September 7, 2010

      seokjin씨,안녕하세요!

I just want to be sure that is it for those word ends with consonant “ㄹ”,should drop the “ㄹ”then add “ㄴ” for the past tense but not ” 팔은 것”,right?

      감사합니다!!! ^^

    안녕하세요,선생님들!

May I know how to say in Korean ” Thank you for something “( e.g “Thank you for helping me.”, “Thank you for coming.”, and so on )

    감사합니다 !!! ^ ^

    • Marcus Cross says: September 4, 2010

Thank you for {something (verb)} in Korean is expressed as: {verb} + 셔서/주셔서 + 감사합니다.

When someone has done something *for* you, this is written as the verb, followed by 주 (to give), followed by 시 (honorific) because you are talking about someone else.

      Example:
Please do {something} (for me): {뭔가} 해주세요.

If you’re not comfortable with this, go back and review level 2 lesson 27:
      http://www.talktomeinkorean.com/lessons/level-2-lesson-27/

시 changes depending on the tense. It becomes 세 in a request in the present tense (주세) and it becomes 셔 when thanking someone for something in the past tense (주셔).

      Examples:

      Thank you for helping me.
To help = 돕다 (dictionary form)
      도와주셔서 감사합니다.
To break it down litterally: 도와 = help, 주셔 = you gave, 서 = so, 감사합니다 = thank you.

      Thank you for coming.
To come = 오다 (dictionary form)
      오셔서 감사합니다.
Litteral breakdown: 오셔 = you came, 서 = so, 감사합니다.

Sorry I’m not as good as explaining things as simply and clearly as the TTMIK team, but I hope this makes sense! As always, if I got anything wrong, someone please correct me. Thanks!

재 여행 가방은 노무 잔은 것 같아요. > 제 여행 가방은 너무 작은 것 같아요.

      가반 > 가방

현명하고 어리석은 형제 Wise and foolish brothers (제 2 장 part 2)

지금 어리석은 동생은 형이 도깨비를 지나기 위해 쓴 개념을 보았다. Now the foolish younger brother saw the concept that the wise older brother used to pass the monster. 그는 형이 도깨비에게 쉽게 속임수를 쓰는 걸 보고 자신도 그리할수 있다고 생각했다. He thought if my brother could trick the monster so easily then he could do the same. 어리석은 동생은 도깨비에게로 다가가며 말했다, “여기 밑을 쳐다봐, 여기 물에는 네가 먹을수 있는 생선이 있어.” So the foolish younger brother approached the monster and said, “Look down, the waters below have fish that you can eat.” 물은 빨리 지나가는 듯 했다. The waters appeared to flow by quickly. 키가 큰 도깨비는 밑을 쳐다보고 여러 크기의 물고기를 보았다. The very tall monster looked down and saw fish of all sizes. 그러나, 도깨비는 곁눈질로 발과 다리를 보았다. However, the monster saw in the corner of his eye a foot and then a leg. 그의 다리는 맛있는 것 같아 보였어요. The leg seemed to be delicious. 말할 필요도 없이 어리석은 동생은 다리를 건너지 못했다. Needless to say the foolish brother never crossed the bridge. 따라서 개념을 알고 있는 것만으로는 충분하지 않고 옳은 방법을 사용하는 것이 필요하다. Therefore knowing a concept is not enough, but using the right method is also necessary.

Can someone answer me? I’d be really grateful :)

    • jinseokjin says: November 21, 2011

      Hi Elena,

When you make the descriptive past tense verb into noun form, you can use “Descriptive verb + -았/었/였던 것 같아요” rule.

“She was beautiful” can be translated as “그녀는 예뻤다” so it is changed like “그녀는 예뻤던 것 같아요”.
