안녕하세요. ^^ Welcome to another lesson in the Word Builder series. In the Word Builder lessons, we introduce letters and words that work as building blocks of the Korean vocabulary. They are not necessarily all Hanja words based on Chinese characters, but many of them are.

Hope you enjoy this lesson, and we are looking at the word “회” [hoe].

감사합니다!

You can view a free PDF for this lesson here, or if you want to study with our TalkToMeInKorean textbooks, you can get them here. And after you learn the basics, try writing your own Korean sentences and get corrections from native speakers through HaruKorean, our 1:1 correction service.

외 is not on a preset key like ㅐor ㅔ so you should do it in two steps “ㅗ” and then “l” in that order > ㅚ ^^

Thanks for having the word-builder lessons, guys. They are one of my favorite lessons here.

Also, thanks for the review at the end. That’s going to help me memorize the words more quickly.

I have a request, though; could you add just a teensy bit more time between the questions and the answers?

So to write a dumb statement… Your teaching us prefixes (in a way) like in English for
example the prefix “re” which means “again”. Ex: Recall, redo, replay, repaint etc.

Your saying 회 is a prefix meaning “to gather”.

In English we have many Prefixes and Suffixes, In Korean are there also prefixes and suffixes?

If this is the case, it will make more sense to me and help me out a little bit.

Thanks for your help and great teaching lessons. Keep doing what you do*

    • With my lack of expertise in Korean, I’ll try to answer. I don’t believe there really are prefixes or suffixes in Korean, not in the way we have them in English. The closest I can think of is like: “전” meaning “ex.” For example, I believe the word for ex-girlfriend is 전여자친구. If there were many more little prefixes like this in Korean, it’d be useful to learn.

But with these Chinese-based words, they’re not really suffixes. 회 means something in Chinese, but that one syllable word has to be combined with other Chinese words in order to make a Korean word. I don’t believe you can manipulate these Chinese prefixes like you can with “re” in English. Also, you can’t mix Chinese based words and native Korean words into one word.

If i’m wrong about any of that, someone could correct me.

  10. 고등학교하고 대학교에서 전 봉사 동호회를 했어요. In high school and the university, I took part in many volunteer clubs.

    Hello Teachers,
I really enjoy your website, it’s fun, interesting and useful. My first post, I’ve kind of been a worm-ttmik (worm-book like) these last weeks, but I need to change my keyboard (so much letters had already disappeared on it, it’s even hard to type in my own language) and train much more before trying to write korean on my computer.
It seems there’s a problem with the files for the lesson (“File not found”) : the mp3 cannot seem to be downloaded and won’t start, at least I’ve been able to download the PDF. (I’m in France, automne en Normandie…, well maybe it’s just me.)
    Thank you for your work.
Hyunwoo-ssi I really like your sense of humor and how you’re teasing your colleague. You’re cracking me up.

Heya this is kinda of off topic but I was wanting to know if
blogs use WYSIWYG editors or if you have to manually code with HTML.
I’m starting a blog soon but have no coding expertise so I wanted to get advice from someone with experience. Any help would be enormously appreciated!

  17. Very good blog! Do you have any tips and hints for aspiring writers?
I’m hoping to start my own site soon but I’m a little lost on everything.
Would you suggest starting with a free platform like WordPress or
go for a paid option? There are so many options out there that I’m totally confused .. Any ideas? Thanks!
