Welcome to another lesson in the Word Builder series. In the Word Builder lessons, we introduce letters and words that work as building blocks of the Korean vocabulary. They are not necessarily all Hanja words based on Chinese characters, but many of them are.

Hope you enjoy this lesson, and we are looking at the word “문” [mun].

감사합니다!

You can view a free PDF for this lesson here, or if you want to study with our TalkToMeInKorean textbooks, you can get them here. And after you learn the basics, try writing your own Korean sentences and get corrections from native speakers through HaruKorean, our 1:1 correction service.

    와우!~~~1등1등~~~^0^

      옛날에 제 한국어 선생님은 저에게 “[문]이 너무 신기네요!~”라고 말했어요~~~~^^
      왜냐하면 “문”을 뒤집어서 “곰”이 돼요~~~”곰 세 마리야~~~”
      하하하~~~

    안녕하세요!
Word Builder 레슨들은 아주 유익해서 좋아요.
들면서 신문이라는 단어가 생각 났지만 사전으로 확인 했는데 “文” 한자 아니죠.
    수고 하셨어요 TTMIK 선생님!

  • 문자가 없다면 단어가 없어요,
    단어가 없다면 문장이 없어요,
    문장이 없으면 종이가 없어요,
    종이가 없으면 문서가 없어요.

    시처럼이라고 생각해요. ㅎㅎㅎ

I as just wondering, how important is it to learn hanja? And if it is important how many should i learn???

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Garrett-Emslie/30900788 Garrett Emslie

To learn Korean itself, I don’t think it’s important at all. If you’re studying Korean at a university or something, then it would probably be useful.

    • 마이크

Only necessary if you want to read the newspaper, and the odd shopfront might use hanja characters too. But it can be useful for learning the chinese-derived vocabulary more quickly. Most of my Korean friends don’t know Hanja that well, though..

If you’re interested there is a book called 외국인 위한 재미있는 한자 (Learn Hanja the Fun Way) which i find quite effective.

    안녕하세요. ^_^

I decided to make some 예문 for Word Building Lesson

    난 “문”이 있는 5 문장을 만들어 ^_^

    이 Lesson에 예문들을 많네요.

문장을 만들기위해서, 넌 많이 문자를 알아야 돼.

    전 한국의문화 발견할래요.

유럽에서, 프랑스어문학은 한국어문학보다 더 인기있는 것 같아요.

    아빠, 햄버거 주문해도 돼요 ?

I knew that I alreary heard 주문 somewhere, it is the title of one of 동방신기’s songs.
In the context of the song, it think means a magic spell

Bonne nuit de France, Goodnight from 프랑스 . 지금 (열두 시 오 분)12:05 이에요 .
Good morning to you in Seoul : D

    안녕하세요.
    이 레슨도 감사합니다.
    1. 요즘에는 신문을 별로 안 읽어요.
    선생님들, 너무 감사합니다. 건강하세요 ▲_~

  • Maim

Someone please correct me if I’m wrong, but I think 문자 also bears the significance of “text” in the generic sense (i.e. advertisements you see in the streets, newspapers, shop windows) as well as “text” as in phone text messages.

    “문자 보내주세요.”
