When texting, people tend to shorten words to make the message shorter and/or to type faster. In Korean, too, people use lots of ‘shorthand’ Korean when texting. In this Ask Hyojin Episode, Hyunwoo, Keith and Hyojin go over some widely used shorthand Korean phrases and talk about how they are used, and how people feel about them. Enjoy!

While shorthand texting is usually popular among the younger generation, there are some select expressions that even the older generations know about. Also there are some others that are only popular and understood among the younger generation. Of course, shorthand texting is only used in casual situations between friends.

Here are the shorthand phrases introduced in the video:

I had someone message me and used ~~ a few times.. Does anyone know if that means anything in particular?

It doesn’t have a particular meaning, but it’s sometimes used to make a statement more friendly or extending the sound at the end. The more ~, the longer the sound.

      For example:
하지마! = ha-ji-ma! (stop doing that!)
      vs.
하지마~ = ha-ji-maaaa (kind of like playful whining)

      or

      오호! = o-ho! (ah-ha!)
      오호~ = o-hoooo
      오호~~~~ = o-hoooooooooooooo
