Korean Dialect Lessons with Seokjin – Lesson #1

In this series, you can learn along side Terris as Seokjin teaches him some phrases in 경상도 사투리, the dialect spoken by people from the Gyeongsang Province area, which includes cities like 대구, 부산, 마산, 포항, 경주, etc.

In the first lesson, learn how to say “Is that so?” or “Really?” in the 경상도 사투리 (Gyeongsang Province dialect).

It’s always important to speak naturally and correct in any language, and whether you want to speak in a 사투리 (dialect) or in 표준어 (standard Korean), you can make your Korean sound more natural by practicing every day with help from a native speaker.
And as always, thank you for studying with us.

  • That was great! I hate sounding like a textbook, and I live in Busan, so this is perfect.

    • It is so nice to read your comment. I hope the follwing episode also will be helpful.

    Thank you <3

  • Old Boy

This is like a dream come true!
After I bought Soekjin’s audio book on dialect, I was hoping some more materials would come out.

By the way, I highly recommend the audio book. It’s fun, funny and educational. Even the music is good!

    • Thanks so much!!! Your comment is so touching! hehe

  • Rigo

Very interesting , but i would like to ask a question
Since no more grammar structures have been introduced for awhile ,does it mean that you have covered ” the basics ” of korean grammar ?
Thanks so much for your hard work

    • Thanks for your comment.
As you may know, we have dealt with more than 9levels and they include many things but not just the basics.

  • Alma

Thank you so much! I visit Busan a lot so can’t wait to try these out! Looking forward to more 🙂

    • Thanks. I am sure you will have a lot of chances to hear 맞나 when you are in Busan.

Following lessons will be helpful, too. 🙂

  • lex

Thank you very much! Very interesting!! Keep doing this!
I have a question. 맞나 – it’s a panmal form? What about 존댓말? 맞나요? Or what?

    • It is casual form (반말), so it is used often between friends.

The formal form is 맞아요(we often say it). It is same as standard word, but the intonation is different.

  • Deidrea

I work in a korean restaurant as waitress, and both of my boss are from 부산. I`ll enjoy this dialect lessons, because I keep repeating their funny phrases ㅎㅎㅎ But… Isn`t dialect 반말?

    • A

      반말 is ‘informal’ 🙂

    • Seokjin Jin

There are also 반말 and 존댓말 in dialect. 🙂

  • Emily

Great lesson! I lived in Gyeongsang for a long time and my boyfriend’s family is also from there. When I first started learning Korean it was frustrating because what I was learning from my textbook sounded nothing like what I was hearing every day! Having these types of lessons would have been really helpful, haha.

I really love this dialect – so fun! ^^ Please have many more 사투리 lessons!

  • Benjamin Hinrichsen

This is an interesting video. I haven’t done any 사투리 study yet but after watching video one I realize I may have been hearing 사투리 but just thought it was someone’s individual style of talking. I am excited to watch the rest of the series!
